Clay is a material of contradictions. It is challenging and forgiving, simple and complex, predictable and surprising, primitive and refined. I continue to learn and explore. I make small sculptures, vessels and wall works. Birds, flowers, foxes, rabbits and owls join the party. The majority of my pieces are individual portraits of animals or birds whose personalities reveal themselves as I paint. I decorate the surfaces with a variety of colored slips and glazes. Details are made by carving into the surface, I also make textures and patterns with stamps and found objects.
Many influences come into play. They range from folk art to Persian miniatures to antique naturalist illustrations. My love of nature and animals, gardens and wild places all have a place at the table. I bring a sense of wonder to my work and hope to create a meaningful connection between my art, nature and the viewer.
